San Diego State University faculty and staff traveling on university business to international destinations must obtain the CSU’s foreign travel insurance (as required by the CSU), which is coordinated through the SDSU Risk Management department. Foreign travel for university business includes academic coursework, field research, attendance at professional conferences and meetings and teaching.
The coverage territory for the foreign travel insurance program includes anywhere in the world except: the United States and its territories and possessions, and any country or jurisdiction which is the subject of trade or economic sanctions imposed by the United States. The California State University’s comprehensive foreign travel insurance coverage includes but isn’t limited to emergency medical coverage within network, medical evacuation, auto liability, legal assistance, lost luggage, passport replacement, trip interruption and general liability coverage. Assistance is available 24-hours a day and 7-days a week.
Employees traveling abroad on university business will have the cost of this insurance covered by the university insurance program so there is no cost to the employee or employee’s department. Additionally, employees may request to include their immediate family member(s) traveling with the employee, but the employee will be responsible for the cost of the family member’s insurance and this cost must be paid prior to trip departure.
To request foreign travel insurance coverage, the employee should complete and submit the Foreign Travel Insurance Form [PDF] at least 10 business days prior to departure from the U.S. to ensure timely processing. Traveling to high-hazard countries requires 30 days’ notice. Please check both the State Department’s Travel Warning List and the CSU Warning List [PDF].
A summary of the CSU’s foreign travel coverage is available by downloading the Coverage Summary [PDF].
It is recommended all employees traveling internationally also sign up for the State Department’s Safe Traveler Enrollment Program to receive information about travel conditions and emergency assistance.
