Risk Management

San Diego State University’s Risk Management program is a service area of Business and Financial Affairs. The program is designed to assist with identification and management of risks to the campus, including establishment of practices that will minimize potential adverse effects. Application of campus risk management practices is the responsibility of all members of the campus community. The following information is provided to facilitate implementation of risk control measures during day-to-day campus operations.

Academic and Student Programs

Contracts and Agreements

Under the terms and conditions of a contract or agreement with San Diego State University for services or use of university facilities, a contractor, vendor, or off-campus individual/group will be required to show evidence of adequate insurance coverage by providing the university with a certificate of insurance that includes additional insured endorsements.

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency preparedness and response guidelines, resources, and training are offered to the campus community so the effects of campus or regional emergency situations can be minimized.

Special Events

Students, faculty, staff and members of the public planning events on campus must follow the Regulations for use of San Diego State University Buildings and Grounds [PDF] for use of campus outdoor space and campus facilities. Special event insurance may be required, as determined by a risk assessment.

Release of Liability (Waivers)

Waivers are designed to protect the university and its employees from legal liability. Waivers are also intended to inform individuals of higher risks associated with certain activities. A waiver must be used for voluntary and university sponsored off campus activity, i.e., academic field trip. Waivers may also be required for higher risk on campus activity, as determined by a Risk Assessment [PDF].
